Hooked on Flyball

How to know when you are hooked on Flyball

  • You call and email friends and family to let them know how your dog did at their first tournament.
  • You are thrilled to get photos from your teammates of your dog in action and you email those photos to all your friends and family.
  • You start asking for vacation days from work around flyball tournaments so you can travel there on Friday and spend Monday recovering.
  • You spend hours braiding just the right kind of tug with just the right toy attached.
  • You are contemplating purchasing a new vehicle so you can haul yourself, all your tournament stuff and the dogs.
  • You work flyball expenses into your family budget.
  • You revise your dogs’ nutrition to maximize their energy and stamina.
  • You carry vetwrap and animax in your car’s first aid kit
  • The above mentioned vetwrap is in your team’s colors
  • You are drawn to purchase athletic wear for yourself in your team’s colors.
  • You take down some pictures in your house to create an “I love My Dog Wall” with their title certificates framed and photos of the dogs in action.
  • You have to move the garbage cans out of the garage to accommodate the flyball equipment you are storing.
  • If you say the word “readddyyyy” your dogs get really wound up. Sometimes you do this just for a giggle.
  • When you are procrastinating doing chores because you are watching videos of dogs racing on Youtube and/or surfing websites and blogs about flyball

How to know when you are REALLY hooked on Flyball

  • You are considering adding a new dog to your family, but you want it to be a height dog so your first flyball dogs can race into their senior years.
  • As you name your dog you contemplate how that name will sound when shouted in the flyball ring.
  • You get a vanity license plate for the above mentioned vehicle that references flyball.
  • You purchase the RV/trailer/toy-hauler in order to travel in comfort to tournaments.
  • You teach yourself how to create a website so your team has something cool and fun.
  • You move the car out of garage to accommodate the flyball practice area you set up.
  • You take up running again… not for yourself but because you want to condition the dog.
  • You know the names of all the height dogs in your region, their breed and their approximate speed.
  • You hang out with your flyball buddies thinking through different lineups and how fast each would run.
  • You are subscribed to all the flyball email lists and actually read all the letters…. Even the ones thanking teams for tournaments in states a thousand miles away.

OMG! …..you really nailed it! Except, I don’t see much difference between being “hooked” on flyball and being REALLY hooked! LoL!

Keep up the good work, Connie! This is FUN reading!

I can see the difference since I now own an RV, I have and still do move the car out of the garage so I can put down matting for boxwork on newbies…. OY, I am obviously addicted. Lord Help my husband.

this list scares me!

Connie, that is so perfect! *LOL* One of our team members forwarded it to our team’s Yahoo Group (another flyball-ism) and everyone agrees it sounds like us!

I have to add one though:
Your weekly grocery budget now includes sharp cheese, peanut butter, and roast beef… for the DOGS! ;)

Awesome post!

Well, one good thing about this post is that it proves that I’m not alone in my flyball preoccupation. In fact it’s Nationwide.

I’ts nice to prove that I’m not as certifiable as some in my family may think….
The aquired obsession is definately part of the game for dogs and humans!

How about this great name for a new pup? Addicted!

That is the other “obession” finding new names not used 100 times over for you “new” flyball dog! I have a list….

We have the Toy hauler 5th wheel AND the 15 passenger van! I have 4 sets of kennels - so I don’t have to move any - house kennels, van kennels, trailer kennels and fold down wire crates that are in the utility trailer we pull behind the 15 pass van - that also carries the boxes, balls, tugs, clothes when we don’t take the 5th wheel!

Our CPA keeps bugging us that we have to do something to write off at least some of the expense…sigh!

I used to think it would be great to meet Jackie, now I’m afraid she has a much more serious (and highly infectious) strain of the disease! I could end up in the streets, panhandling for tournament entry fees!

Just this past week Deb and I started (guardedly)talking about going to that “big, major, out-of-region tournament, with a flyball seminar” being our annual vacation.

Anybody looking for a time-share in a non-flyball area? Cheap? It’s close to a nice lake?!??

My name is Deanna and I’m a flyball addict. It started as a simple hobby but quickly grew into something else. At first it was just little things; buying my toothbrush or dog gear in team colors. Quickly it became more serious; constantly searching ebay for matching shoes or buying any serving tray in team colors so our crating area matches.

Since starting I’ve had a baby and I’m afraid that I’m pushing my addiction on her. Half of the clothes in her closet are in team colors as well as sippy cups, bowls, spoons, etc. I’m afraid her first word is going to be “Ready….”

Is there a support group I can join? ;)

oh no.
we’ve got it over here in California.

there’s a 1983 1/2 Vanagon Westfalia sitting in the driveway primarily for flyball.

We’ve gone from 1 dog and a foster at this time last year to 3 dogs and a foster. And that seems normal.

We see our flyball family more often than our “normal” friends or family.

We also have a now amazing knowledge of the “good” drive-thru’s on most major California highways.

and we now get calls from everyone we’ve every met who works in a local shelter or with a rescue to take a look as a “good dog sport prospect up for adoption”.

Is it too late for me?

Thank God! I so relate…
Also, I thought I was the only one searching for team color items! LOL I was starting to get embarrassed to even pull my stuff out! Latest is a collar with his name and UTB embroidered on it!

Great list guys…
