SnapDragon

SnapDragonI would like everyone to meet a very special dog, who goes by the name SnapDragon. She has a multitude of titles behind her name, CD, CDX, NAP, NIP, NA, NAJ, ONYX, TF-III, and NAFA Region 14 MVP, and I have a feeling there are even more. These were taken from her website here. There is more than meets the eye about this very busy Border Collie.

When I first met SnapDragon and her owner, Jenny McRoy, Jenny sounded like a soccer mom. “Well, she has obedience on Monday, Agility on Tuesday, flyball on Wednesday, we have Thursday off, Herding on Friday, and a flyball/agility/obedience/herding trial over the weekend.” It was a common thing to hear her say, and there were challenges to all of this. Jenny was a florist and owned her own shop. She was often unable to accompany SnapDragon to her many trials and tournaments. Jenny and SnapDragon had some very good dog friends who were always happy to make room in their vehicle for SnapDragon.

One day, while returning from the agility field, Jenny was involved in a head on collision with a drunk driver and she was seriously injured. Jenny’s worst injuries were to her legs and she spent the next two years recovering. If she said it once, she said it a hundred times, “I only have to be able to run for two minutes. The amount of time it takes to run an Agility course.” So, Jenny and SnapDragon worked and worked until they were, back in the obedience ring, back on the Agility field, back on the herding field, and back in the Flyball ring.

SnapDragon

SnapDragon is getting close to retirement age, but I think everyone will join me in giving a hand to a very special Border Collie, SnapDragon, or as her friends call her, Snap!

Snap also has at least an HCT (herding capability tested) title that she earned last November. I can’t remember if she did the Junior Herding dog, but the HCT did enable her to earn the Versatility title. Truly a great and wonderful little border collie! Thanks for putting her in the spotlight!

I’ve known Jenny and Snap for a while and in my mind the greats accomplishment that Snap did is not getting all those titles in all those different events, although she does have quite a few, but what she inspired in Jenny after her car accident.

I can’t even describe the seriousness of Jenny’s injuries after the accident, especially to her legs. The paramedics that pulled her out weren’t even sure the doctors could save one of her leg. Even after the leg was saved, there were questions if she would ever walk again.

But Jenny was determined not only to walk but to run. What inspires her to do so was her dogs, especially Snap. As a friend standing on the sideline, the recovery looked pretty rough but what kept her going was the thought of running Snap again. Jenny was definitely determined. NO MATTER WHAT!

Jenny’s first competition back from her accident was a flyball tournament. I had to drive her to the tournament because she wasn’t even “Okayed” by her doctor to drive over there. However, walking with he help of a walker, Jenny did run Snap again.

Today, Jenny is walking and running without any help. She is once again active in obedience, agility, herding and flyball (More with her other dog Gyp now than Snap). Everyone is amazed how well she has recovered, and I think she couldn’t have done it without Snap.

Thanks Fay, for featuring Jenny and Snap. What an awesome team they make. We have seen them compete in all their sports except obedience, I think. What an inspiration Jenny has been to many of us to have overcome such serious injuries, and what a blessing to have such a wonderful dog like Snap to have been her inspiration on her road to recovery.
Bravo to them both!

From Snap and I Thank you to Fay and all. Snap has had 11 years of fun, hopefully she will have quite a few more. She will continue to run Flyball as long as she wants. Thanks to all the friends that helped with her over the years, she and I couldn’t have done as much without you.
